Giuseppe Lucci

Lucci / Italy Roma / 1910-1991 /

Giuseppe Lucci was born in 1910 in Bagnacavallo, Italy.

At the age of around 20, he learned string instrument making from Pietro Borghi (1892-1957), who was active in Modena, and was also influenced by Leandro Bisiach (1864-1946), who was active in Milan.

In 1953, he moved to Rome and set up a workshop, which is still run by his apprentice and son-in-law, Rodolfo Marchini (R. Marchini 1943-).

Lucci has won many awards in craft competitions (Cremona/Florence/Roma/Liege/AscoliPiceno).

In 1958, due to his experience and technical ability, he was invited to teach at the Cremona School of Violin Making, but he declined the offer.

Lucci also had a deep knowledge of musical instruments from the 1800s and 1900s and owned an extensive and impressive collection.

Lucci was a dedicated maker, and in his lifetime he built over 700 stringed instruments using a variety of models. Each instrument boasts high quality, made from carefully selected materials and finished with a warm orange varnish, making him one of the most highly regarded makers, loved by performers and collectors alike.

There are two labels, one from the Bagnacavallo period and one from the Roman period, and from 1967 onwards, a branding iron featuring the letter "G" with two fishes has been used around the endpin and inside the instrument.

He died in Rome in 1991 (age 81).
