Pietoro Sgarabotto

Sgarabotto / Milan, Italy / 1903-1990 /

Born in Milan in 1903.
His father was Gaetano Sgarabotto (1878-1959)
After studying to play the violin and viola, he moved to Parma with his father in 1926. He continued to play and at the same time helped his father with his business. From 1929 to 1936 he taught at the Parma violin-making school alongside his father. From 1959 to 1973 he taught at the Cremona violin-making school.
He has won various awards at exhibitions in Rome, Bologna, Florence, Ascoli Piceno, and elsewhere.
He used the same models and techniques as his father, but his style differed; his varnishes, purfling, and scrollwork were less elegant than his father's work. Like his father, he often used Italian maple.
The varnish varies from brownish yellow to flame red.

He died in Parma in 1990 (aged 87).
