Giuseppe Calace

Calace / Italy Napoli / 1899-1968 /

"Carace" is a Neapolitan family of string instrument makers whose name remains as a mandolin brand today.

His father, Raffaele Calace (1863-1934), was a maker, mandolin player and composer.

Violins made by Raffaele were also played in Japan at the time.

Raffaele's brother, Nicola Calace (1859-1924), also went to America and made many string instruments.

Giuseppe was born in 1899 and was himself an accomplished mandolin player who became a luthier.

He made a variety of stringed instruments, including mandolins, guitars, and lutes, and was very successful as a maker of Strad or Gagliano-style violins.

He died in Naples in 1968 (age 69).
