Ferdinando Garimberti

Garimberti / Milan, Italy / 1894-1982 /

Born in Parma in 1894.

In 1902 (at the age of 8), he moved to Milan with his family, where his parents opened an inn called “al trotter,” where Romeo Antoniazzi (1862-1925) was a regular customer.

From around 1910-11, he received training in string instrument making from the Antoniazzi brothers, and through them he met Leandro Bisiach (1864-1946), who gave him work and tools.

However, this period was short-lived, as he moved to Turin for military service between 1914 and 1918.

After the war, they married in Turin, and Leandro invited Ferdinand, who had taken up a completely different profession, back to Milan.

After returning to Milan in 1920, he began working with Giuseppe Pedrazzini (1879-1957), which further developed Ferdinand's craftsmanship.

He won the Rome Championships from 1927 to 1939, and won gold medals in Padua in 1932 and Cremona in 1937.

From 1931 to 1966, he taught at the Cremona School of Violin Making, where he taught the young Gio Batta Morassi (1934-2018) and Francesco Bissolotti (1929-2019).

In 1936 he was awarded the Order of the Italian Ministry of Education.

He made instruments that were very elegant, precise and precise, without changing the style of his instruments much.

In particular, the models that add his own unique touch to Stradivari are reminiscent of the models of his long-time colleague, Giuseppe Ornati (1887-1965).

They prefer solid wood backs, and sometimes instruments have an internal branding.

He died in Milan in 1982 (age 88).
