Giuseppe Pedrazzini

Pedrazzini / Milan, Italy / 1879-1957 /

Born in 1879 in Pizzighettone, Cremona.

He initially worked as a carpenter under his father, a furniture maker.

He later became interested in string instrument making, and in 1903 began studying violin making under the Antoniazzi brothers (Romeo Antoniazzi 1862-1925/Riccardo Antoniazzi 1853-1912) in Milan.

As a result, his early style was strongly influenced by the Antoniazzi brothers.

With basic woodworking skills, he began working independently in 1906.

During World War I, he worked with Giuseppe Ornati (1887-1963) in an aircraft factory and had a close relationship with him.

He created refined instruments that reflected the fashions of the time, modelled on Amati and Stradivari.

He received many awards, including prizes at the Rome instrument-making competition in 1920 and at the Cremona instrument-making competition in 1937.

In addition to producing new instruments, he also produced elaborate copies of old instruments and dealt in valuable instruments as a dealer. He was also a capable businessman, employing Ferdinando Garimberti (1894-1982), Piero Parravicini (1889-1957), and his great-nephew Natale Novelli (1908-1981) in his workshop, and produced a great number of string instruments (from violins to double basses and guitars) for the international market.

In particular, they had close business ties with a British company (Boosey & Hawkes).

During the same period, various labels and brands were used, and the color and texture of the varnish also varied greatly depending on the era.

He died in Milan in 1957 (aged 78).
