Gaetano Sgarabotto
Born in Vicenza in 1878, he initially taught himself to make violins.
In 1901, he moved to Milan, where he worked with Riccardo Antoniazzi (1853–1912) and Leandro Bisiach (1864–1946), before returning to Vicenza in 1905. He left work during the war years (1916–1918), resuming his career in Vicenza in 1926 and later in Parma. In 1929, he taught at the Parma violin-making school with his son, Pietro Sgarabotto (1903–1990). He returned to Vicenza from 1937–1941, then moved to Parma from 1942–1948, Plescia from 1949–1956, and Parma from 1957–1959, where he lived until his death.
Gaetano has made many instruments for Leandro Bijacchi.
Gaetano instruments are elegant and sophisticated and are made using a variety of models.
He particularly enjoyed the Amati and Stradivari-inspired models.
He also used his high level of skill to create many very elaborate copies of old Italian crafts.
He died in Parma in 1959 (age 81).
