Carlo Giuseppe Oddone
Born in Turin, Italy in 1866, he began his apprenticeship under Gioffredo Rinaldi (fl.c. 1850-1888) around 1879. He then worked under Frederick William Chanot (1857-1911) in London from 1889 to 1891, before opening his own workshop in Turin in 1892 (at the age of 26).
He made instruments based on Stradivari and Guarneri models, and later copied those of Giuseppe Rocca (1807-1865), developing his own style, making him one of the most talented and prolific Italian makers of his generation.
The instruments are varnished in a rich red or golden orange color and are made from superior materials. They feature intricately carved concentric scrollwork and long, elegant corner edges. Some instruments are branded inside the instrument, under the endpin, or inside the cello tuning pegbox. Labels are marked with production numbers, and there are over 269 records.
He died in Turin in 1935 (aged 69).
