Andreas Hansen Hjorth

Hjorth and Sons / Copenhagen, Denmark / 1752-1834 /

The Hjorth and Sons are a leading Copenhagen violin-making family, and Andreas Hansen is its founder.

Born in Hadersley, Denmark in 1752, he moved to Copenhagen in 1789, where he laid the foundations for a company that has continued for five generations, from father to son.
Judging by the appearance of his instruments, it seems likely that he studied instrument making in the Tyrol. His instruments are often over-arched, but otherwise very beautifully made and have a distinctive appearance. The labels indicate that he was aiming for an Amati-style instrument.
In 1799 he became violin maker to the Royal Opera Orchestra, and in 1804 he became instrument maker to the Royal Court.
Some instruments have "AHH" stamped on the label or back plate.
He died in Copenhagen in 1834 (age 82).
