Hendrick Jacobs

Jacobs / Netherlands Amsterdam / 1629-1704 /

Hendrik Jacobs is a leading violin maker of the Amsterdam School, known as the "Dutch Amati."

He was born in Amsterdam around 1629.

He was a London-born violin and cittern maker who moved to Amsterdam around 1607 and studied string instrument making under Francis Lupo (1582-d.?).

His fellow student was Cornelius Klaenman (1626-1686), Lupo's son-in-law.

Following in the footsteps of Lupo, Jacobus also produced Amati-style violins.

Throughout his life, he created extremely elaborate instruments, using slightly small scrolls, thin corner edges and purflings made from whalebone, and beautiful varnish ranging from golden yellow to a slightly reddish color.

Jacobus had two sons-in-law, Gijsbert Harmens Verbeeck (1642-1717) and Pieter Rombouts (1667-1728), who both became luthiers.

After 1690, Rombouts took over the business and continued to produce string instruments under Jacobs' name for about ten years after his death.

He died in Amsterdam in 1704.
