Peter Wamsley (I)
Born in London around 1640.
Walmsley's workshop in London was known by various names at different times, all of which included the word "Harp."
*"ye Harp&Sign" "the Harp" etc.
It is commonly known as "the Golden Harp", and this name is also used on the label.
Walmsley built a fine Steiner model violin with a dark red varnish.
He effectively retired in 1741, but for a while his label was used by his son Peter (Peter Wamsley II fl.c.1734-1751) and his pupil Thomas Smith (Thomas Smith c.1725-1789).
In 1748 his apprentice Thomas took over the workshop.
As an early figure in the history of British violin making, Walmsley's instruments are extremely valuable.
He died in 1744.
