William Taylor
William Taylor was a maker active in London from 1769 to 1820.
In 18th century England, as in other European countries, high-arch Steiner model violins were popular, but the French Revolution prompted many excellent violin makers to move to England from France. Among them was Vincenzo Panormo (c. 1734-1813), who produced magnificent violins modeled after Stradivari, exerting a Cremonese influence on London makers and creating a trend for modern violins in England. Taylor is said to have been a pupil of Panormo.
While maintaining the tradition of London violin making, he also produced some excellent Stradivarius model violins.
Some of these violins have branding on the buttons on the back. These meticulous pieces, with their attention to detail, give a sense of the history of the changes in London School violin making.
