Robert Thompson was a maker active in London from 1743 to 1770.
He and his brother Peter (Peter Thompson fl.c.1738-1794) are said to have been pupils of Daniel Wright II (1707-1740).
John Johnson (fl.c1740-1762), who was active in the same era, also studied under Wright.
English violin making began in earnest around the end of the 17th century, and the high-arch Steiner type was particularly popular, and Thompson also produced Steiner models.
The Thompson family continued to be active in London, but Roberto was a standout among them, being the only one to sign his instrument.
