Wilhelm Hermann Hammig
Born in Markneukirchen, Germany in 1838.
He was the son of Wilhelm August Hammig (1835-1870) and learned violin making from his father.
From 1850 he worked under Carl Grimm (1794-1855) in Berlin, Germany, and later in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
In 1864 he returned to his hometown of Markneukirchen, and after spending two years in Frankfurt (1873-1875) he settled in Leipzig, where he held appointments with the Conservatoire and the Gewandhaus Orchestra.
In 1894, an office was opened in Berlin.
He has received awards in Dresden, Milan, Halle and London.
He is also well versed in old string instruments and has crafted traditional model violins with great meticulous workmanship.
He died in Leipzig in 1925 (aged 87).
