Leopold Widhalm (I)
Leopold Widderharm was one of the best German makers after Steiner.
Born in Nuremberg in 1722.
He is said to have been a pupil of Sebastian Schelle (fl.c.1700-1750), and in 1781 he established his own practice in the suburbs of Gostenhof, Nuremberg.
They produce instruments that continue the tradition of Steiner (Jacob Stainer 1621-1683), with deeply carved edgework and beautiful purfling on the medium-high arch body, as well as Steiner-model F-holes and scrolls, all meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail.
His son, Martin Leopold Widhalm II (1747-1806), also took over his father's label and produced violins.
The Widdahalm family is one of the most important luthiers in Nuremberg.
