Nicolas Augustin Chappuy

Chappuy / France Paris / b.c.1730-1784 /

Born in Mirecourt around 1730.
He studied string instrument making at Mirecourt and began working in Paris around 1750. He was a prolific maker, and produced instruments that incorporated a wide range of characteristics from both the Mirecourt and Old Paris schools. They have flat arching and somewhat large scrolls, sometimes carved. He tended to choose materials with simple grain, but he preferred high-quality maple. His instruments are generally varnished with a yellow varnish, which is somewhat hard and brittle, but there are many variations.
Like his contemporaries, he also produced elaborate violas da more and pochette violins, some of which have the "N. Chappuy a Paris" branding on the back button and under the endpin.
He died in Paris in 1784.
