Ferdinando Gagliano

Gagliano / Italy Napoli / W. 1770-1795 /

Born in Naples in 1724.

It is believed that he was active in making pottery between 1770 and 1795.

His father was Nicola Gagliano (fi.c.1740-1780), but he was taught string instrument making by his skilled uncle Gennaro Gagliano (fl.c.1740-1780).

Nicola had four sons who became violin makers: Giuseppe (Giuseppe Gagliano fl.c.1770-1800), Antonio (Antonio Gagliano fl.c.1780-1800), and Giovanni (Giovanni Gagliano fl.c.1785-1819), all worked together, but Ferdinando made instruments independently.

Ferdinand used materials with thin grain, but the finish was beautiful, and he produced instruments that further emphasized the Gagliano style, with small, tightly wound scrolls, F-holes with sharp wing cuts, and thin, somewhat hard varnish.
