Tomaso Eberle

Eberle / Italy Napoli / W. 1750-1792 /

He was born in 1727 in Wils, in what is now Tyrol, Austria.

This region has long produced many excellent string instrument makers, and it is believed that he learned the basics of string instrument making together with his brother Johann Anton Eberle (1736-?).

Although it is unclear whether he was related to Tomaso, Johann Udalrichus Eberle (1699-1768), one of Prague's leading makers, was also born in this town.

After that, for reasons unknown, Tomaso moved to Naples, where he absorbed the style of the Gagliano family (Nicola Gagliano 1730-1787) and began producing porcelain. He was active from around 1750 to around 1792.

The craftsmanship is consistent, with a slightly boxy, neat medium-high arching, thin, upright F-holes, and the scroll is intricately crafted, unlike the Galliano.

The wood is not varnished with the greenish varnish seen in Galliano, but with a beautiful golden yellow varnish that has no reddish tint.
