Lorenzo & Tommaso Carcassi
The brothers Lorenzo and Tomaso Carcassi were violin makers active in Florence between 1750 and 1780.
It is believed that he learned instrument making from Giovanni Battista Gabrielli (w.1740-1770), who was also active in Florence.
At that time, the Austrian Habsburg family held power in the Duchy of Tuscany, so they produced many Steiner-type string instruments.
The brothers' instruments also had slightly exaggerated Steiner-type high arches with F-holes carved into them that allowed the wings to fit into them, and were coated with a thin layer of golden yellow varnish.
Although the brothers worked separately, they used a joint label for most of their instruments.
