Around 1730, he began making string instruments in Naples under his father, Alessandro Ggliano (fl.c.1700-1730).
He is the most famous and popular member of the Gagliano family.
He was more prolific than his younger brother Gennaro (Gennaro Gagliano fl.c.1730-1780), and often produced instruments with uniquely bulging arching, Stradivari-style F-holes (with stops at standard distances), and pale golden yellow varnish.
It features the long, narrow pegbox and dense scroll typical of Naples, as well as purfling made of beechwood and black-stained paper, which was used by the Neapolitan school and the Gagliano family.
He died in Naples around 1787.
