Gennaro Gagliano

Gagliano / Italy Napoli / W. 1730-1780 /

From around 1730, he studied violin making under his father Alessandro (Alessandro Gagliano fl.c.1700-1730) and his brother Nicola (Nicola Gagliano fl.c.1730-1787).

He was one of the most skilled makers in the family, and created instruments with beautiful arching and F-holes that were modeled after Amati and Stradivari.

The purfling is made of maple, rather than the beech wood used by the Galliano family.

He is said to have taught his brother's son Ferdinando (Ferdinando Gagliano b.1724 fl.c.1770-1795) how to make violins.
