Giulio Cesare Gigli was born in Rome around 1724.
From around 1738, he studied string instrument making under Michael Platner (w. 1700-1755), and took over the workshop in 1753.
Although his instruments are rare, he was an important maker who continued the tradition of David Tecchler (1666-1748) and Plattner in the late 18th century.
He was a skilled craftsman and built rather large instruments using the characteristic Roman model.
The arching and F-holes are influenced by Steiner. The spirals are beautiful, and the cello is especially popular.
Died in 1794.
