Vincenzo Postiglione (II)

Postiglione / Italy Napoli / 1835-1916 /

Born in Naples, Italy in 1835.

He is one of the important makers of the Neapolitan school. His father, Vincenzo Postglione (I) (W. 1790-1840), who shares the same name, is also thought to have been an instrument maker, and it is thought that he learned violin making from his father.
He honed his skills as an apprentice to Vincenzo Jorio (W. 1830-1850) from 1847 to 1852. In 1855 he went independent in Naples and continued making porcelain until he retired in 1910 and handed over the business to his son.

Using a varnish unique to Naples, he produced very convincing copies of Nicola Gagliano instruments, as well as Guarneri models in a deep red-brown, as well as Stradivari and Guadagnini models.
During his lifetime, he produced a wide range of instruments, including 278 violins, 60 violas, 115 cellos, 29 double basses, viola da more, and viols.
Some instruments have branding on the buttons.

He died in Naples in 1916 (aged 81).
