Giuseppe Dollenz

Giovanni & Giuseppe Dollenz / Italy Trieste / 1832-1892 /

Giovanni Dolenz was born in Trieste in 1802, and like many other makers of the time, he began making string instruments around 1830 while working as a double bass player in the local orchestra (Gran Teatro Civico Orchestra).

There is also information that he was a pupil of Lorenzo Storioni (1744-1816), who was temporarily staying in Trieste around 1804, but this was not possible as Giovanni was too young at the time, and it is thought that he later used Storioni's instruments, which were left behind in Trieste, as a reference.

Giovanni himself is thought to have learned the art of saxophone making from Antonio Pellizon (1763-1850) and others.

Giovanni instruments are characterized by a low arching and downward-pointing upper corner edges.

The F-holes are engraved large, and the lower wings are not carved down. Also, the rounded scrolls do not have the final carving.

In 1832, his son Giuseppe was born and they began working together to make stringed instruments.

Giuseppe built instruments in a style similar to that of his father, and also used locally sourced wood.

Montagnana cellos are highly prized.

1857 (age 55) Giovanni dies.

1892 (age 60) Giuseppe dies.
