Carlo Bergonzi (II)
Born in Cremona in 1757.
His full name is Carlo Antonio Lorenzo.
His grandfather was Carlo Bergonzi (1683-1747), who was one of Stradivari's most important pupils, his father was Zosimo Bergonzi (1724-1779), and his brother was Nicola Bergonzi (1754-1832).
Giovanni Battista Ceruti (1756-1817), a representative Cremonese violin maker of the same era, was also born around the same time as Carlo (II).
Similarities in the instruments suggest that he worked with his father and brother in the string instrument making business, but instruments he made himself are extremely rare.
He also worked as a guitar maker, and several of his instruments still exist.
By the beginning of the 19th century, the Cremonese violin-making tradition was in decline, and with it the famous Bergonzi family, with Carlo (II) as their last violin, also retired from the scene.
He died in Cremona in 1836 (aged 79).
